On Tuesday, NPR (National Public Radio) and three Colorado radio stations filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump and officials from his administration. The lawsuit challenges an executive order that suspends federal funding for public media. Filed in federal court in Washington, D.C., the lawsuit contends that this order significantly violates the U.S. Constitution, particularly the First Amendment, which guarantees freedom of the press and expression.
Katherine Maher, NPR’s CEO, emphasized the severity of the situation, stating that the order poses a direct threat to the rights of a free press and the 246 NPR-affiliated stations nationwide. The complaint also includes Roaring Fork Public Radio, Colorado Public Radio, and KSUT Public Radio as co-plaintiffs.
The lawsuit argues that Trump’s order infringes upon the separation of powers and undermines Congress’s authority to make decisions regarding public spending. NPR further cautioned that the loss of federal funding would be catastrophic, potentially affecting nearly one-third of its operational budget.
