Balcanic Trap: Hitler and the Invasion of the Soviet Union

Winston Churchill and the British government aimed to form a Balkan front against Hitler during World War II, encompassing Yugoslavia, Greece, and Turkey. In March 1941, British troops landed in Greece as part of “Operation Lustre,” transporting over 62,000 Commonwealth soldiers by April 14. These forces, known as “Force W,” commanded by General Henry Maitland Wilson, were intended to bolster Greece’s defenses against a potential German invasion.

The decision to deploy troops in Greece remains contentious. Critics argue that this move diverted resources from potentially capitalizing on Italy’s defeat in Cyrenaica and facilitated Germany’s subsequent operations. Proponents of the Greek deployment claim it delayed Germany’s invasion of the Soviet Union, which had been originally scheduled for mid-May. Adolf Hitler postponed the attack to June 22, partly due to logistical challenges stemming from the Balkan campaign. Senior German commanders indicated that their armored divisions required repairs and rest after engagements in Greece.

However, it was ultimately a coup in Yugoslavia, which overthrew a pro-German government, that led Hitler to reconsider his timeline for invading the Soviet Union, intensifying his focus on dismantling Yugoslavia. Other factors, including severe spring weather in 1941, exacerbated the situation, complicating military movements for both the Germans and the Allies.

In summary, while the deployment of British forces to Greece is seen by some as a catalyst for delaying the Nazi invasion of the USSR, others contend it was a strategic blunder that sacrificed immediate military opportunities in North Africa and intensified Germany’s operational capacity.
