Recently, the Chinese government issued a warning to Chinese men in Bangladesh about the dangers of social media postings that promise quick marriages to foreign women. This caution arises from a surge in cases involving marriage scams and human trafficking. The Chinese Embassy in Dhaka clarified that no marriage agency is legally authorized to provide international marriage services, emphasizing that citizens must not conceal such activities.

China faces a significant demographic crisis, with an estimated 35 million excess men unable to find spouses. This is largely attributed to the longstanding one-child policy, which encouraged a cultural preference for male children. Many female infants were subject to selective abortion or abandonment, leading to a stark gender imbalance.

The situation worsened in 2024, with marriage rates plummeting to 6.1 million from 7.7 million the previous year. Economic pressures and a growing rejection among women of traditional patriarchal expectations have contributed to this decline. As a result, a generation of “leftover men” is increasingly looking to countries like Pakistan, Russia, and Bangladesh to find brides, inadvertently fueling the human trafficking trade. Reports indicate that women from Bangladesh are being trafficked to China under the guise of marriage, a grim reality underscored by the embassy’s warning that those engaging in illegal cross-border marriages risk arrest on trafficking charges.
