The Bulgarian Ministry of Culture recently held an official ceremony to present archaeological artifacts returned with the assistance of international partners from Switzerland and Germany. Among the notable items returned was an ancient bronze gladiator helmet, dating back to the 1st century, facilitated by Swiss cultural institutions, including the Federal Office of Culture in Bern.

Additional items included 872 ancient and medieval coins, a bronze vase, and a fibula, which were successfully repatriated from Germany thanks to collaborative efforts involving the Bavarian Criminal Police, the Federal Commission for Culture and Media, and various ministries focused on foreign affairs and internal security, as well as anti-organized crime units in Bulgaria.

During the event, Minister of Culture Marian Bachev emphasized that illicit trafficking and trade of cultural properties have been persistent issues since antiquity, affecting scholarship to this day. However, he noted a growing public and institutional awareness around these challenges, offering hope for gradual reductions in such trafficking activities.

Vice-Minister Todor Chobanov highlighted the helmet’s immense historical significance as evidence of events in the latter half of the 1st century AD in what is now Bulgaria. He mentioned that the helmet has a substantial market value estimated at €3 million. The intricate design features a depiction of Medusa, indicating a need for potential restoration, and a griffin motif, suggesting the helmet was likely worn by a Thracian warrior.

Chobanov confirmed that the helmet and additional artifacts will be displayed at the National History Museum in Sofia, reflecting Bulgaria’s commitment to safeguarding and showcasing its cultural heritage.
