In recent weeks, oil prices have seen a notable decline, marking the steepest monthly drop in over three and a half years, attributed to rising global economic tensions, as reported by Reuters. Specifically, Brent Oil contracts fell by 49 cents, reaching $63.70 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) dropped by 40 cents, settling at $50 per barrel. To date, companies have reported losses of 15% and 16% for Brent and WTI, respectively—the largest declines since November 2021.
This decrease in oil prices has been closely linked to U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to impose tariffs on all imports starting April 2, a move that was quickly mirrored by China. The ongoing trade war between the two largest economies in the world has had repercussions across various sectors, including the oil industry.
Looking ahead, the upcoming OPEC meeting scheduled for June 5 is expected to propose an increase in oil production for the second consecutive month as a response to these market fluctuations.
