Creșterea nivelului mării va provoca o „migrație devastatoare”.

A recent study warns that rising sea levels, driven by climate change, will soon become unmanageable, potentially leading to “catastrophic internal migration.” This scenario could unfold even if global temperatures rise at the average rate observed over the past decade—1.2°C. The melting ice from Greenland and Antarctica has quadrupled since the 1990s and is currently the primary contributor to sea level rise.

### Impacts of Sea-Level Rise

Rising sea levels are considered one of the most severe long-term consequences of the climate crisis. Scientists highlight that the international goal of limiting global temperature increase to below 1.5°C is increasingly difficult to achieve. Even with rapid reductions in fossil fuel emissions to meet this goal, sea levels may still rise by an average of 1 centimeter per year by the end of the century. This rate surpasses the pace at which nations can build defensive coastal systems.

The melting of ice from Greenland and West Antarctica could result in a staggering 12-meter rise in sea levels, which researchers warn would be “truly horrifying.” However, scientists emphasize that any degree of avoided global warming through climate action is vital. It can slow down sea level rise and offer more time for preparation, thus reducing human suffering.

### Conclusion

In summary, while immediate and substantial action is imperative to mitigate the impacts of climate change, understanding the long-term effects of rising sea levels is crucial. Studies demonstrate that sea level rise is occurring more swiftly than previously expected, necessitating urgent global efforts to address climate challenges.
