Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, recently announced that he will be reducing his involvement in the Trump administration following a significant decline in the company’s profits and revenues during the first quarter of 2025. Tesla’s sales have seen a global downturn, which many analysts attribute to Musk’s increasing political profile and his distinct role in the current administration.
In the first quarter, Tesla reported a troubling 20% decrease in revenues compared to the previous year, with profits plummeting by over 70%. These figures have raised concerns among investors, leading the company to issue warnings about continued challenges ahead, and they notably refrained from providing a growth forecast.
The decline in sales has coincided with widespread public backlash against Musk’s political involvement. His financial contributions, amounting to over $250 million to Trump’s re-election effort, have drawn criticism, as has his leadership in the Government Efficiency Department (Doge), which aims to cut federal spending and drastically reduce the federal workforce. In response to these challenges, Musk has stated that he will be significantly reducing the time he spends on Doge, only dedicating one or two days a week to government issues from next month.
Tesla’s total revenues reached $19.3 billion in the recent quarter, falling short of analyst expectations of $21.1 billion, and down 9% from the previous year. The company has sought to stimulate demand by reducing prices, yet this strategy has not sufficed to counteract the influence of tariffs imposed by Trump on Chinese imports, which have severely affected Tesla’s operations. Although Tesla vehicles sold domestically are assembled in the U.S., the company relies heavily on parts produced in China.
