Donald Trump anunță redeschiderea celebrei închisori Alcatraz.

In an announcement on his social media platform Truth Social, former President Donald Trump proposed reopening and modernizing the iconic Alcatraz prison in San Francisco Bay. He expressed a desire to house the most violent criminals in this historic facility, which has a significant legacy as a notorious maximum-security prison.

### Background on Alcatraz

Trump referred to the United States as a victim of violent and recidivist offenders who perpetuate societal decay, and thus he commanded the Bureau of Prisons, the Department of Justice, the FBI, and the Department of Homeland Security to reopen and expand Alcatraz. He believes that reopening this prison would symbolize law, order, and justice.

Historically, Alcatraz was a formidable prison surrounded by the chilly waters of the West Coast’s largest bay. For 29 years, it was deemed escape-proof, with no successful breakouts reported during its operational years, although rumors of successful escapes remain.

### Historical Significance

Before its use as a prison, Alcatraz was considered haunted by indigenous peoples who avoided the island. The Ohlone tribe used it for punishment, with early European explorers naming it “Isla de los Alcatraces” in 1775, meaning “Island of the Pelicans.” Over time, the island was utilized for various military purposes, including as a fort during the Civil War.

In 1933, control of Alcatraz was transferred from the military to the Department of Justice, officially becoming a federal penitentiary in 1934. Notable criminals were housed there, including the famous gangster Al Capone, reflecting the prison’s reputation as a last stop for America’s most dangerous offenders. Over the years, Alcatraz became known for its harsh conditions and stringent rules, with privileges earned through good behavior.

### Operational History

Initially, 250 prisoners lived on Alcatraz, with a staff of around 150. Though known as the “Devil’s Island,” Alcatraz provided decent living conditions for inmates compared to other prisons of the time. Prisoners were entitled to basic necessities, with other amenities earned through labor and good behavior.

From 1934 to 1939, Al Capone was one of the most notorious inmates, alongside others like George “Machine Gun” Kelly and Alvin “Creepy” Karpis. The prison experienced continuous escape attempts, with 14 notable escape attempts involving 36 individuals, but only a handful managed to escape.

In 1963, Alcatraz was closed by Robert F. Kennedy, primarily due to high operational costs. The island later became a site of indigenous occupation from 1969 to 1971, and it currently operates as a tourist destination.

### Conclusion

Trump’s intention to revive Alcatraz as a prison reflects ongoing discussions about handling violent crime in America. The prison, once a symbol of high-security justice, could once again serve a vital role in the country’s criminal justice conversation. The reopening proposal raises various implications, including historical significance, operational considerations, and the complex nature of crime and punishment in contemporary society.
