Orașul care suspendă plățile pentru apă în timpul verii.

Tokyo’s authorities are launching a significant initiative aimed at combatting the adverse effects of extreme summer heat by eliminating the basic water charge for a four-month period. This decision, announced by Governor Yuriko Koike, is expected to provide financial relief to households, with an average savings of 5,000 yen (approximately 35 dollars) per household.

The initiative comes in response to Japan’s hottest summer recorded last year, which saw extreme heat waves impacting various regions globally. By removing the basic water fee, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government aims to alleviate the financial burden of inflation on residents and promote the use of air conditioning, thus reducing the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly among vulnerable populations.

Statistics indicate that over 80% of heat-related deaths in the past five years have involved elderly individuals. Many seniors tend to avoid using air conditioning due to high costs or concerns regarding health impacts, further exacerbating the risks posed by heat waves.

The measure will affect around 8 million households, equating to a total population of approximately 14 million residents. To implement this plan, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government has allocated 36.8 billion yen, noting that only the basic water fee will be waived, while additional consumption beyond that level will incur regular charges.

Overall, this initiative reflects a proactive approach by the Tokyo government to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents during extreme heat conditions, emphasizing both public health and economic considerations.
