Robert Prevost, un american, a fost numit papă.

On the evening of May 8, 2025, Robert Prevost was elected as the new Pope, marking a historic moment as he became the first American pontiff. He will be known as Pope Leo XIV. As he appeared on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica to a cheering crowd of thousands in St. Peter’s Square, Prevost expressed his hopes for global peace and the importance of “building bridges” through dialogue.

In his first address, he greeted approximately 100,000 faithful with the words, “Peace be with you all.” The new Pope showed gratitude towards his predecessor, Pope Francis, and called upon congregants to help foster justice without fear.

Donald Trump, the American president at the time, congratulated Prevost, expressing honor in having the first American Pope and eagerness to meet him. This moment was seen as a significant milestone for the United States.

The election of Pope Leo XIV followed the traditional conclave process held in the Sistine Chapel. White smoke signaled to the world that a decision had been reached about the 267th pontiff of the Catholic Church. Prior to this, the Vatican had suspended its internal telecommunications, although communication in St. Peter’s Square remained active due to the large gathering of believers.

The voting process included two rounds daily, with black smoke indicating no decision and white smoke signifying the election of a new Pope. If the conclave extended beyond three days, the cardinals were permitted a day of reflection.

Pope Francis had passed away on April 21, 2025, at the age of 88, the day after Easter, creating the vacancy that led to the conclave and election of Pope Leo XIV.
