At the European IIF 2025 Summit, Ana Botín, CEO of Banco Santander, emphasized that the protectionist policies of the White House might have a more detrimental impact on the U.S. economy than on Europe in the short term. She pointed out that tariffs, which are essentially taxes imposed on consumers, would ultimately result in higher costs for the economy, leading to reduced growth and increased inflation.

Since the beginning of his second term in January, President Donald Trump has imposed a range of tariffs on U.S. imports with the aim of bolstering domestic production and decreasing trade deficits with various trading partners. This approach has raised concerns among analysts who warn that such tariffs could exacerbate inflation and place additional pressure on American consumers’ budgets.

Botín noted that, in the immediate term, Europe might not be as heavily affected by these tariffs as the U.S. would be. The imposition of new taxes, including a recent announcement of a 25% tariff on all automobile imports beginning April 2, has elicited retaliatory measures from various entities, including the European Union. Such actions only serve to heighten trade tensions and complicate the global economic landscape.
