Ungaria bănuiește că un “posibil atac biologic” ar putea fi originile focarului de febră aftoasă.

In Hungary, a concerning outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) has emerged, significantly impacting livestock farmers across the nation. Gergely Gulyas, the Chief of Staff for Prime Minister Viktor Orban, has suggested, without providing specific evidence, that this outbreak could potentially be linked to a “biological attack.” This assertion comes amid rising alarm as thousands of cattle have already been culled in an effort to control the spread of the virus.

During a press conference, Gulyas stated that it cannot be entirely ruled out that the FMD virus may not have originated from natural causes, hinting instead at the possibility of an artificially modified virus. His comments raise critical questions about the source of the outbreak and highlight concerns over biosecurity and the potential for malicious biological threats.

Although Gulyas did not specify who might be responsible for such a biological attack, he mentioned that his suspicions stemmed from verbal information received from a foreign laboratory. However, he cautioned that the findings from researchers on this issue have not yet been thoroughly proven or documented.

The outbreak has had severe ramifications within Hungary, which, as of a December animal census, was reported to have approximately 861,000 cattle. In response to the outbreak, there has been a widespread slaughter of infected and potentially infected animals to help control the spread of the disease. Regional responses to the outbreak have been swift; both Austria and Slovakia have implemented border closures at dozens of crossing points to prevent the disease from spreading further. Some cases of the disease have already been detected in the southern regions of Slovakia, indicating that the outbreak may extend beyond Hungary’s borders.

The implications of such an outbreak are significant not only for the agricultural sector but also for public health and national security. The nature of foot-and-mouth disease—extremely contagious among cloven-hoofed animals—suggests that a rapid and coordinated response is necessary to mitigate further economic losses and ensure the safety of livestock across Europe.

As authorities continue to investigate the cause of the outbreak, the emphasis remains on controlling the spread and safeguarding other agricultural regions. While Gulyas’s comments about a potential biological attack add a layer of complexity to the situation, the lack of concrete evidence makes it difficult to draw definitive conclusions at this point. The veterinary and agricultural sectors are on high alert as they navigate the challenges posed by this emerging crisis.
