Ziua când România a învins cel mai înalt vârf montan.

On May 17, 1995, Constantin Lăcătuşu became the first Romanian to reach the summit of Mount Everest, standing at 8,848 meters. After spending a month and a half at altitudes above 5,200 meters, he achieved this historic feat alongside an international team of experienced climbers, Sherpas, and cooks.

Lăcătuşu reported that the summit was successfully reached around 2 PM on that day, utilizing the northern route—known for its dangers, including historically fatal accidents involving notable climbers like Edmund Hillary. The team ascended via the eastern side, navigating treacherous conditions between 7,800 to 8,200 meters, overcoming strong winds and three nearly vertical rock obstacles. Remarkably, the first two challenges were completed without supplemental oxygen.

Further historical significance surrounds May 17, marked by various noteworthy events:

  • In 1749, Edward Jenner, the English physician credited with inventing the smallpox vaccine, was born (d. January 26, 1823).
  • 1838 saw the death of Charles Maurice de Talleyrand, a French diplomat (b. February 2, 1754).
  • The French actor Jean Gabin was born on 1904 (d. November 15, 1976).
  • Geo Dumitrescu, a Romanian poet and translator, was born on 1920 and is notable for works like "Jurnal de campanie" (d. September 28, 2004).
  • In 1923, Romania and Czechoslovakia extended a defense alliance that was initially signed in 1921.
  • 1940 marked the Nazi German occupation of Belgium.
  • Explorer Thor Heyerdahl embarked on his Atlantic voyage on the papyrus vessel Ra II in 1970.
  • 1999 saw Ehud Barak become the Prime Minister of Israel.
  • The Romanian Metropolitan Nestor Vornicescu passed away on 2000 (b. October 1, 1927).
  • Saddam Hussein was re-elected to lead Iraq’s Baath Party in 2001, a position he held since July 1979.
  • Jacques Chirac was officially inaugurated as the President of France for a second term in 2002.
  • In 2003, Denmark ratified NATO accession protocols for several Eastern European nations, including Romania.
  • The Romanian Senate ratified an agreement to cooperate with Europol in 2004 to enhance efforts against organized crime.
  • Renowned historian Eugen Weber, noted for his contributions to modern French history, died on 2007 (b. April 24, 1925).
  • 2009 saw UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon launch a report on reducing risks from natural disasters, urging global governments to prepare and mitigate such risks.

These events capture notable historical moments, reinforcing the significance of May 17 as a day not only for Lăcătuşu’s achievement but also for numerous other milestones in various fields throughout history.
