On April 16, 2025, the National Museum of Romanian History (MNIR) in Bucharest will host a press conference to announce the recovery of a significant cultural artifact: the fourteenth gold Dacian bracelet. This bracelet, discovered illegally during poaching activities in the UNESCO heritage sites of the Orăștie Mountains, represents an important aspect of Romania’s cultural heritage.

The announcement was made via a museum communiqué, which stated that the event will begin at 14:00 at MNIR’s headquarters located on Calea Victoriei, with the presence of Ms. Natalia Intotero, the Minister of Culture, along with representatives from several involved authorities.

The recovery of the bracelet was a collaborative effort involving the MNIR, the Timiș County Police Inspectorate, the General Inspectorate of the Romanian Police, various prosecutors’ offices, the “Horia Hulubei” Institute of Physics and Nuclear Engineering, and the Ministry of Culture. This specific bracelet is part of a larger group of 24 Dacian gold bracelets that were illegally exported from Romania in the early 2000s and were originally discovered at the Dacian settlement of Sarmizegetusa Regia.

The communiqué expressed gratitude to various police entities, including the Timișoara Police Department and the Lugoj Police Department, as well as to the officials from the Ministry of Culture and experts from MNIR for their cooperation and assistance in recovering this piece of heritage. The press release also highlighted that, between 2007 and 2013, Romania successfully recovered thirteen other bracelets from various European nations and the United States.

The recently recovered bracelet is a multi-spiraled gold piece, dating back to the mid-1st century BC, and is a prime example of the craftsmanship of the Dacian culture during the classical era. It is currently housed at MNIR and will be on display for attendees during the press conference.

In addition to the recovery of the bracelet, there have been numerous operations aimed at repatriating cultural artifacts that were illegally removed from Romania. These efforts have significantly contributed to restoring the National Cultural Heritage, including other Dacian royal gold bracelets, silver jewelry, ancient coins, and various tools and weapons.

The event signifies not only the importance of recovering national heritage artifacts but also reinforces the ongoing collaboration among cultural and law enforcement bodies to protect and preserve Romania’s rich history.
