On Monday evening, the Vatican published the will of Pope Francis, revealing his wishes for burial and reflections on his life. The Pope requested to be buried in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, near the icon of the Virgin Mary known as “Salus Populi Romani.” He envisioned a simple grave, placed directly in the ground, marked only with his name “Franciscus.”
In his testament, Pope Francis expressed his sentiments about the suffering he endured in the later stages of his life, stating that he offered this suffering to the Lord as a plea for peace in the world and fraternity among nations. He reflected on those who have cared for him and prayed for him, hoping that the Lord would reward them.
The Vatican News translated the will, which begins with a declaration in the name of the Holy Trinity. The Pope acknowledges his earthly life is drawing to a close and expresses a hopeful outlook on eternal life, indicating that he wishes to articulate his final wishes concerning his burial place. He entrusted his life and priestly service to the Blessed Virgin Mary, requesting that his earthly remains rest in the papal basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, a location significant to his personal faith journey.
He shared that throughout his pontificate, he had often visited this ancient Marian sanctuary for prayer at the start and conclusion of his apostolic journeys, relying on the maternal care of the Virgin Mary. Pope Francis specifically requested that his tomb be prepared in a side niche of the basilica, situated between the Pauline Chapel and the Sforza Chapel. He requested a grave that would be simple and devoid of special ornamentation, bearing only the inscription “Franciscus.”
To manage the expenses related to his burial preparations, Pope Francis indicated that a benefactor’s funds would be allocated for this purpose, and he had previously instructed Monsignor Rolandas Makrickas, the extraordinary commissioner of the Liberian Chapter, regarding these arrangements.
In addition to his wishes for burial, Pope Francis included his thoughts on suffering and its purpose, affirming that he offered his own suffering for the noble causes of peace and unity. He expressed gratitude to those who have cared for him during his life’s journey, alongside those who will continue to keep him in their prayers.
The testament was concluded on June 29, 2022, and was signed by the Pope himself.
Pope Francis passed away on April 21, 2025, at the age of 88, on Easter Sunday. He had been hospitalized due to bilateral pneumonia since February 14, 2025. Despite receiving intensive treatment, including oxygen therapy and blood transfusions, his condition worsened until his eventual passing.
This testament illustrates not only his funeral preferences but also his deep-seated faith and commitment to peace, providing a poignant reflection on his life’s work and legacy.
