Pictura „Fata cu unicorn” de Rafael Sanzio, prezentată pentru prima dată în România.

admin 2 min read

In 2027, the renowned painting “Lady with an Unicorn” by Raphael will be exhibited for the first time in Romania at the National Brukenthal Museum in Sibiu. This is part of a cultural exchange agreed upon by the prestigious Borghese Gallery in Rome, which will showcase “Leda and the Swan” by Leonardo da Vinci in Sibiu in late 2025.

Alexandru Constantin Chituță, the museum manager, expressed joy over this collaboration, highlighting the importance of institutional partnerships. He noted the challenges of bringing such significant masterpieces, which are highly sought after by major museums worldwide, to Romania. This agreement signifies a historic moment for the art history of the country, with plans for prominent exhibitions that will include works from the Brukenthal collection and others.

Raphael Sanzio, a pivotal figure of the Renaissance, is celebrated for his clear forms and ease of composition. His process included significant projects such as the decoration of the Vatican’s rooms, where he created the vital fresco “The School of Athens,” encapsulating themes of truth, goodness, and beauty.

“The School of Athens” features prominent philosophers, with Plato and Aristotle positioned at the center, representing idealism and earthly matters, respectively. Raphael’s work embodies the perfect blend of philosophy and the fine arts, showcasing the characteristics of the era.

The “Lady with an Unicorn” will showcase a young woman depicted in a refined manner, adorned in a stylish outfit, complete with a beautiful backdrop. This piece, entered into Borghese’s collection in 1833, was once misidentified as Saint Catherine until later clarifications identified the unicorn. With details focusing on the intricate garments and accessories, the character radiates elegance, further enhancing the painting’s allure.

Initially attributed to various artists, the consensus has shifted to Raphael following careful restorations and evaluations. The piece, dated between 1506 and 1509, may also depict Maddalena Doni, Raphael’s future bride, suggesting deeper personal connections.

Overall, this exchange between Italy and Romania marks a significant cultural event, uniting historical masterpieces with local narratives and setting the stage for enhanced appreciation of art. The collaboration underscores the enriching potential of international partnerships in the arts.
