According to a report cited by BBC, the entire population of Gaza faces a “critical risk” of famine and food insecurity. Over 2.1 million Palestinians are experiencing “extreme levels of food insecurity” due to Israel’s blockade on humanitarian aid.
The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) report indicates that the situation has significantly worsened since October 2024, although famine has not yet been declared. Currently, around 500,000 individuals in Gaza are affected by hunger, with one in five people experiencing food scarcity.
A two-month ceasefire between Israel and Hamas provided a temporary reprieve, but renewed hostilities and the ongoing blockade of humanitarian assistance since March have reversed any progress made. The report emphasizes that nearly 71,000 children under the age of five are projected to suffer from malnutrition by April 2026 if the situation does not improve.
