The exhibition titled “Tudor Arghezi – 145 years since the birth” at the “Theodor Pallady” Library of the Romanian Academy celebrates the life and work of the esteemed poet Tudor Arghezi. Running daily from 9 AM to 2 PM until May 30, entry is free of charge.

The exhibition showcases a variety of items that reflect not only Arghezi’s literary contributions but also his personal world. Visitors can view rare books, volumes with personal dedications, affectionate postcards, and letters addressed to his mother and brother. Furthermore, the exhibition includes family photographs and sketches related to various inventions, such as a novelty device called the “apparatul de pocnit fără împușcătură.” Additionally, personal documents like his journalist license and a certificate from November 1944, affirming that I. N. Theodorescu was indeed Tudor Arghezi, are on display. The exhibition also highlights Arghezi’s anti-Nazi stance, evident from documentation regarding his imprisonment in Târgu Jiu and a memorandum requesting his release signed by several literary figures.

Among other displayed items are significant contributions to Arghezi’s journalistic endeavors, including his celebrated work “Bilete de papagal” from 1928. The exhibition features portraits of Arghezi created by prominent artists like Corneliu Baba, Camil Ressu, and Iosif Iser, as well as a unique sculpture by academician Mircia Dumitrescu depicting Arghezi and his wife, Paraschiva.

During the exhibition’s opening, academic Gheorghe Chivu emphasized the importance of the event as a tribute to Arghezi’s exceptional contributions to literature. He compared Arghezi’s poetic language reforms to those established by Mihai Eminescu. Chivu highlighted that Arghezi’s relentless pursuit of “Cuvinte potrivite” (fitting words) was central to his work, marking him as a noteworthy journalist with an expressive style and innovative syntax.

Organized by the Romanian Academy Library and the National Museum of Romanian Literature, the event also acknowledged the generous contributions of Traian Radu, who donated valuable items belonging to Arghezi’s family.

The exhibition serves not just as a commemoration of Arghezi’s legacy but also as a platform for exploring the depth of his influential work in Romanian literature.
