Românii s-au exprimat. Ce opinii vor avea polonezii în două săptămâni?

The recent presidential election in Romania, which elevated Nicușor Dan, the moderate mayor of Bucharest, to the presidency, has been a moment of relief not just for the country but also for the European Union. There were fears that George Simion, a hardline nationalist, could win the election, which would likely have radicalized Romania’s stance within Europe, aligning it with nations like Hungary and Slovakia that have embraced anti-EU and pro-Russian positions.

The electoral landscape in neighboring Poland also drew attention, as it held a crucial first round of presidential elections shortly after Romania’s, on May 18. These elections are seen as pivotal for determining Poland’s future direction. The results were intensely competitive, with Warsaw’s mayor, Rafal Trzaskowski, supported by Donald Tusk’s Civic Platform, narrowly leading with 31.36% against Karol Nawrocki of the ruling Law and Justice party (PiS), who garnered 29.54%. A far-right candidate, Slawomir Mentzen from the Konfederacja party, followed with 14.8%.

Tusk publicly backed Dan during Romania’s campaign, even sharing a video message in Romanian, whereas PiS showed support for Simion. These cross-border electoral influences reveal broader ideological affinities between pro-European and nationalist-conservative factions in both countries, intensifying the political contest in the European context.

The implications of these elections transcend national borders. They form part of a wider struggle within Europe where pro-EU and nationalist agendas are confronting each other for control over the future trajectory of the Union. The election outcomes are especially significant considering the current geopolitical turmoil owing to the war in Ukraine and shifting US-EU relations.

In Romania, despite George Simion appearing to have a commanding lead initially, a historical vote on May 18 showed a significant turnout from the pro-European majority concerned about potential isolation from the EU. The chilling prospects of a nationalistic AUR party gaining power worried many—Romania’s economic stability heavily relies on EU funds, and any disruption could lead to financial catastrophe. The business community and the public quickly recognized these risks, influencing their voting behavior amidst fears surrounding the future of democracy if an extremist party were to gain control.

In contrast, Poland’s economic situation differs from Romania’s, with campaign discussions focusing on migration, attitudes towards Ukrainian refugees, and abortion rights. However, shared security concerns, particularly relating to the ongoing war in Ukraine, resonate in both nations.

With Romania emerging from a lengthy political crisis set in motion last November, it is poised for a presidential term marked by substantial economic challenges. Meanwhile, Poland has only two weeks before it must confront its critical election, heightening stakes and interests in both countries’ political fates as they navigate their roles within the evolving European landscape.
