Poveștile neștiute de sub pavimentul Bucureștiului, adunate într-o carte unică.

The Bucharest Municipality Museum’s archaeologists have unveiled a groundbreaking publication featuring notable archaeological experiments conducted in Bucharest and Ilfov County over the past decade. This book is unprecedented in presenting these findings directly to the general public, as previous results were typically restricted to specialized reports and academic journals.

The initiative to compile this volume was motivated by a desire to share engaging stories from archaeological digs with a wider audience. Key contributors—including Radu Nicolae, Alina Pîrvulescu, and others—selected the most captivating discoveries. The book, which bears the collective efforts of these professionals and is coordinated by Vasile Opriș, is part of the “Istorii Urbane” collection published by Corint.

The work comprises eight sections that outline significant archaeological research directions concerning the city of Bucharest. Interestingly, while the discoveries may not seem monumental at first glance, it is essential to recognize that Bucharest has historically served as a critical transit corridor from the South Danube region to Central Europe, particularly via Transylvania. The areas around the Dâmbovița and Colentina rivers were pivotal for trade-related communities.

Urban settlement in Bucharest emerged relatively late in historical terms, around the 15th century. The publication dives into everyday history, revealing numerous intriguing narratives. It emphasizes the need to explore ancient church foundations and forgotten necropolises, now buried beneath the capital’s streets and sidewalks. As highlighted by the museum’s manager, Adrian Majuru, Bucharest continues to unveil new surprises beneath its surface.

The book is set to be launched on May 31, 2025, at the Corint publishing house’s booth during the Bookfest International Book Fair.
