Summary of the Celebration of the Romanian Language Day

On August 31, 2025, the Romanian Academy and the Academy of Sciences of Moldova will jointly celebrate Romanian Language Day with a festive session in Chișinău. This event, titled "Our Romanian Language," is scheduled to begin at 11:00 AM in the Azure Hall of the Academia de Științe a Moldovei and will be broadcast live by the Institute for the Development of the Informational Society.

The opening ceremony will feature addresses from Acad. Ioan-Aurel Pop, the President of the Romanian Academy, and Acad. Ion Tighineanu, the President of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. The program will include scientific presentations from notable scholars such as Theodor Codreanu, who will discuss "Mihai Eminescu. The Romanian Language as an Expression of Being," alongside Acad. Mircea Dumitru, who will speak on "The Romanian Language as a National and Cultural Identity Factor," and Acad. Gheorghe Chivu, discussing "The Academy and the Romanian Language."

The event aims to gather members from both academies, directors of institutes, university rectors, researchers, and cultural figures, creating a platform for the exchange of ideas and the promotion of the Romanian language.

Following this session, the 14th World Congress of Eminescologists will be held in Chișinău from August 31 to September 1, further highlighting the significance of the Romanian language and its cultural heritage.

Celebrations in Iași

In Iași, the Institute of Romanian Philology "Alexandru Philippide" has partnered with the "Anastasie Fătu" Botanical Garden to celebrate Romanian Language Day with a variety of cultural activities. The official opening will take place on August 31 at 12:00 PM in the Botanical Garden’s new greenhouses, featuring speeches from representatives of the organizing institutions. The program includes concerts, recitals, exhibitions, book launches, and workshops for participants of all ages.

Additionally, on August 30, at 6:00 PM, the public is invited to attend a theatrical performance of "Hardughia" by Mircea Radu Iacoban at the "Vasile Alecsandri" National Theatre.

Celebrations in Cluj-Napoca

In Cluj-Napoca, the Institute of Linguistics and Literary History "Sextil Pușcariu" is organizing a week-long series of events from August 29 to September 5, 2025. The festivities will kick off with the opening of the exhibition "‘Scoposul mieu iaste binele comun.’ The Practical Literature of the Transylvanian School" on August 29 at the National Museum of History of Transylvania, highlighting the contributions of Transylvanian scholars from 1743 to 1830 on various pertinent issues including environmental care and public health.

On September 2, a public open day will provide visitors with a chance to explore laboratories and research projects conducted by the institute. The week-long celebration will culminate with the "Sextil Pușcariu Days" International Conference on September 4-5, featuring Acad. Mircea Martin as a guest speaker.

Legislative Recognition of the Day

Romanian Language Day is celebrated annually on August 31, a date chosen in alignment with a 1990 initiative in Moldova known as "Limba Noastră." This legislative acknowledgment was formally established in Romania through Law No. 53/2013, emphasizing the significance of the Romanian language as a cultural and national identity beyond borders.

Through these initiatives, both the Romanian Academy and its institutes fulfill their mission to promote and cultivate the Romanian language through various cultural manifestations, including the establishment of dictionaries, grammars, anthologies, and scholarly research.

Overall, the celebrations highlight the enduring importance of the Romanian language in both Romania and Moldova, reaffirming its role as a fundamental aspect of national identity and cultural heritage.
