On Friday, the Dutch government announced the establishment of a provision of €5.7 million to cover potential compensation following the theft of Dacian artifacts from the Drents Museum in Assen. This decision was communicated by the Dutch Ministry of Culture.
The financial provision arises from an insurance regime that partially guarantees exhibitions featuring valuable artifacts. A spokesperson from the ministry explained that this co-insurance system encourages museums to host exhibitions of significant artworks or treasured items, with the assurance that the state will contribute financially in cases of theft or damage.
The incident occurred between January 24 and 25, when the Drents Museum hosted the exhibition “Dacia: Empire of Gold and Silver.” Thieves stole a helmet from Coțofenești and three gold bracelets, which had been loaned from a museum in Romania. The intruders gained access by detonating an entrance using an improvised explosive device.
Surveillance footage captures the moment the thieves broke into the museum. The blast caused extensive damage, allowing them entry in less than three minutes. Video evidence shows three individuals forcing open a door and setting off an explosion; around 3:45 AM local time, they placed an explosive device against a museum wall, resulting in an explosion that shattered several windows, facilitating their entry.
During a press conference, Justice Officer Debby Homans confirmed that the explosion allowed the thieves to access the museum, enabling them to steal vital artifacts from Romania’s national heritage, including the coveted Coțofenești gold helmet and the Dacian bracelets from Sarmizegetusa Regia.
The Drents Museum displayed 673 valuable artifacts made of gold and silver, loaned from 18 Romanian museums, including the National Museum of Union in Alba Iulia and the National History Museum of Romania, as well as institutions in Cluj-Napoca, Bucharest, Iași, and Timișoara. These exhibits included famous treasures like the Dacian bracelets from Sarmizegetusa and the treasure from Lupu.
