Alexandru Emanuel Lahovary hailed from a prestigious boyar family that had produced several renowned conservative politicians. He spent his childhood in France, where he also completed his studies, earning a law degree from the University of Paris in 1877. He quickly entered the diplomatic service, starting as an unpaid attaché in Paris and climbing the ranks to become a minister plenipotentiary by 1889. Throughout his career, he represented Romania in various diplomatic roles across Europe, including in Paris, St. Petersburg, and Constantinople.

Married to Ana Kretzulescu, a talented writer and daughter of a prime minister, they had six children—five daughters and one son. Despite the era’s limitations on women’s roles, Ana was an active supporter of diplomatic and humanitarian efforts for Romania.

The Tragedy at Poiana Țapului
In July 1915, tragedy struck when Ana Maria took her life at the family estate in Poiana Țapului. Her mother, Ana, had moved there for the summer with her children, seeking solace during turbulent times. The family’s close friend, Constantin Argetoianu, recalls visiting them just hours before the incident, noting the vibrant and joyful atmosphere. He reflected on the strong ties of friendship formed during their diplomatic careers.

The day of the tragedy, Argetoianu received a shocking phone call notifying him of Ana Maria’s death. Devastated, he rushed back to Poiana Țapului to support the grieving family. Upon arrival, he found Ana’s mother deeply affected, highlighting the family’s anguish. Despite spending hours together, words failed them as they sat vigil over the young woman’s body, both enveloped in profound sorrow.

The circumstances surrounding Ana Maria’s decision remain shrouded in mystery. Friends and family speculated on the pressures or struggles she may have faced, but the exact reasons for her tragic choice were never revealed.
