Cercetătorii găsesc diferențe semnificative între modul în care gândesc oamenii și Inteligența Artificială.

Recent research published in Transactions on Machine Learning Research has revealed important differences between the decision-making processes of artificial intelligence (AI) and human beings, highlighting potential real-world implications that may catch society off guard. The study specifically focused on the performance of large language models (LLMs) in forming analogies, a task that both humans and AI were tested on.

The findings showed that humans excelled in both simple letter-string analogies and digital matrix problems, where participants were required to identify missing numbers in matrices. In contrast, the AI’s performance dramatically declined, particularly in more complex analogy tasks based on narratives. This indicates a significant gap in reasoning abilities between humans and AI systems.

One major factor influencing the performance of AI during these tests was the order of responses, often referred to as the "order effect." This phenomenon can lead to different outcomes based on the sequence in which information is presented, suggesting that LLMs may be more prone to paraphrasing and could struggle with complex reasoning tasks that are not directly tied to the data they have been trained on.

The study concluded that LLMs lack "zero-shot" learning capabilities. In zero-shot learning, a learner can make predictions about unseen classes based on their understanding of previously observed samples and general rules. In contrast, AI models primarily operate by identifying and matching patterns without the ability to generalize from those patterns to broader concepts. This limitation means that, while AI can excel at recognizing existing data patterns, it struggles to extrapolate and apply learned concepts to new and varied problem types.

Martha Lewis, the co-author of the study and an assistant professor of neuro-symbolic artificial intelligence at the University of Amsterdam, emphasized that AI models are adept at identifying and matching patterns but lack the ability to generalize beyond those patterns. This distinction is crucial as it reflects a fundamental difference in how humans and AI process information. While humans can abstract from specific instances to develop broader cognitive principles, AI systems remain tethered to their training data and cannot adapt to new situations in the same way.

Lewis noted that the efficacy of AI applications often hinges on the volume of training data—greater opportunities for exposure to data lead to better pattern identification. However, she pointed out that truly understanding and abstracting from data involves much more than just recognizing patterns; it requires the capability to utilize data in a nuanced and flexible way.

The implications of these findings are significant. As AI continues to be integrated into various sectors, including healthcare, finance, and customer service, it is essential to recognize the limitations of AI in complex decision-making scenarios. The inability of AI models to generalize from data means that they can sometimes lead to erroneous conclusions or decisions in real-world applications.

Furthermore, as AI technologies advance, there is potential for misunderstandings regarding their capability and reliability in critical areas. This is particularly concerning when considering AI’s role in sensitive domains, such as elderly care, where a lack of nuanced understanding could have serious consequences.

In conclusion, while AI, particularly in the form of advanced language models, has demonstrated remarkable abilities in pattern recognition and data processing, this study underscores a fundamental limitation: the lack of generalization and abstraction capabilities akin to those of human cognition. As AI continues to evolve, it is vital for developers, businesses, and society at large to remain aware of these limitations and prepare for the potential implications of relying on AI systems for complex decision-making in an increasingly automated world.
