China’s Ministry of Commerce has stated that it is evaluating the U.S. offer for tariff negotiations, but with one key condition: the U.S. must demonstrate sincerity during the discussions. This demand from China arises amid the ongoing economic war initiated by former President Trump, which has exerted pressure on the Chinese economy and destabilized global markets.
China’s officials have indicated a willingness to consider the U.S. negotiating proposals, provided that they show a genuine intention to reevaluate the tariffs that have adversely affected global markets and supply chains. Currently, U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods have surged to a staggering 145%.
In a potential dialogue, Chinese officials have stressed that if the U.S. fails to correct what they perceive as misguided tariff measures, it would indicate a lack of sincerity from the U.S. side, which could lead to further mutual damage between the two nations. They warned that merely stating intentions while acting otherwise, or using coercion and veiled threats in negotiations, would be ineffective.
Former President Trump has claimed that Chinese officials have repeatedly sought negotiations, asserting that “there is a great possibility of reaching an agreement.” The tariffs imposed by the U.S. on Chinese products, which came into effect in April, have reached 145%, while Beijing has retaliated with a 125% increase on imports. Notably, there has been a temporary reprieve on tariffs for certain technology products such as laptops and phones.
As the economic rift continues to unfold, the stakes remain high for both countries, with broader implications for the global economy.
