On May 9, 2025, at 12:00 PM, the National Museum of Art Timișoara, in collaboration with the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Italian Embassy in Bucharest, will inaugurate the exhibition titled “145 Years of Diplomatic Relations Between Romania and Italy” at the Arcada Gallery.

This exhibition is part of a broader anniversary program initially presented by the Romanian Embassy in Rome, marking the establishment of diplomatic relations between Romania and Italy on December 6, 1879. The initiative was first launched in October 2024 at the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament.

Organized by the Diplomatic Archives of the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Historical-Diplomatic Archive of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the exhibition is a collaborative effort with the Italian Embassy in Romania. It showcases the combined expertise of Romanian and Italian professionals.

The exhibition features bilingual thematic panels accompanied by archival images, facsimiles, and excerpts from speeches by key political leaders from both Romania and Italy. It covers various themes including the establishment of diplomatic relations in the 19th century, interwar bilateral cooperation, the resumption of relations post-World War II, collaboration in international organizations, economic ties, and the contributions of Italian and Romanian minorities in strengthening the connections between the two nations.

Visitors will have the opportunity to see a range of diplomatic documents, telegrams, letters, verbal notes, protocols, excerpts from contemporary press, and coins issued in Italy during the 19th and 20th centuries. Some of these items come from the collections of the National Bank of Romania and private sources.

The collaboration between the National Museum of Art Timișoara and its Italian partners underscores the significance of cultural exchanges and joint projects between museums in Romania and Italy, which are essential for the development of large-scale museum projects.

Initially displayed at the National Bank of Romania from January to February 2025, the exhibition will travel to major county capitals in Romania and will be on view for the public in Timișoara from May 9 to May 29, 2025, at the Arcada Gallery. This segment of the exhibition aims to honor the valuable contributions made by Italian businesses operating in the region for over thirty years, highlighting their investments in the city’s growth and development.
