Primul bust infantil realizat de Constantin Brâncuși, expus la Muzeul Național Brukenthal

admin 2 min read

The “Bust de copil” (Child’s Bust), sculpted by Constantin Brâncuși in 1906, is on display for the first time at the Muzeul Național Brukenthal in Sibiu from April 5 to April 27, 2025. Visitors can admire this significant work daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Curated by Alexandru Constantin Chituță, the exhibition not only features the “Bust de copil” but also includes a range of accompanying materials, such as photographs, drawings, lithographs, and other artworks.

This specific bust, known as “Enfant,” marks the beginning of a series of child-themed sculptures created by Brâncuși after he relocated to Paris in 1904. The sculpture was purchased directly from the artist by the painter Ștefan Popescu and has since passed through various private collections. In 2018, a Romanian collector acquired it at a Sotheby’s auction in London and returned it to Romania.

Crafted in plaster and finished with a patina, the bust has been publicly displayed at two exhibitions in 1906, both in spring and autumn, where it garnered attention and praise from jurors of the time. During his initial months in Paris, Brâncuși engaged in various commissioned sculptural projects but soon began his own artistic exploration. He diversified his material use and began to distill forms that would later characterize his body of work.

Art critic Sidney Geist remarked on the significance of this bust, noting Brâncuși’s evolution beyond conventional modeling techniques. The “veiled gaze” of the child, combined with the gentle tilt of the head, evokes a sense of mystery, showcasing the artist’s boldest gesture in the context of the naturalistic style that dominated the genre at the time.

The importance of this work in Brâncuși’s sculptural mastery and his pioneering role in modernism has been highlighted in retrospectives, including the first significant exhibition of his work at the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 1995. The exhibition’s catalog emphasizes the contrast between the simplicity of the plaster form and the extraordinary spirit of childhood that Brâncuși captures in his work. Additionally, it notes that the patination of his plaster models allowed him to envision his sculptures in bronze, enabling him to select the most progressive designs for casting.

The exhibition at the Muzeul Național Brukenthal not only introduces this significant piece to the public but also contextualizes Brâncuși’s artistic journey and his transforming vision of sculpture within the modern art movement.
