Un oraș mayaș de 2.800 de ani, găsit în Guatemala.

Recent archaeological discoveries in northern Guatemala have unveiled the remains of a Maya city that dates back over 2,800 years. The site, located near the Mexican border, was announced by the Guatemalan Ministry of Culture and is situated approximately 21 kilometers from the well-known archaeological site of Uaxactun in the Petén department, which is recognized as Guatemala’s primary archaeological area and a significant tourist destination.

This newly uncovered city, referred to as “Los Abuelos,” spans approximately 16 square kilometers and is believed to have been one of the most important ceremonial centers during the Middle Preclassic period (800-500 BCE). The Ministry of Culture has emphasized the city’s historical importance within the context of Maya civilization in the densely forested Petén region.

The name “Los Abuelos” derives from the discovery of two anthropomorphic sculptures that signify an ancestral couple. These figures, which date between 500 and 300 BCE, may be connected to ancient ritual practices commemorating ancestors, highlighting their cultural and symbolic importance in Maya society.

Additionally, the excavation has revealed another area known as “Petnal,” where a notable 33-meter-high pyramid adorned with frescoes from the preclassic period can be found. Another site named “Cambrayal” features a unique system of canals designed for water transport, showcasing the advanced engineering abilities of the Maya.

The Maya civilization was extensive, covering what is now southern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, and Honduras, with its origins tracing back to around 2000 BCE. Its peak period occurred during the Classic era, roughly between 400 and 450 CE.

These discoveries not only enrich our understanding of Maya history but also contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage and offer insight into the sophistication of ancient Maya urban planning, religious practices, and engineering feats.
