On May 1, the Philippine Coast Guard announced the interception of a Chinese research vessel, the Tan Suo 3, engaged in illegal activities within the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) off the northern coast of Ilocos. The vessel was detected approximately 92 nautical miles from the shore, and its irregular movements raised suspicions of unauthorized marine research operations that violated Philippine sovereignty.
In response to this violation, the Philippine authorities dispatched a patrol vessel and an aircraft to intercept and escort the Chinese ship, effectively halting its research activities. During the operation, officials also observed a submersible, the Shenhai Yongshi, typically used for scientific explorations, alongside a fast boat retrieving unidentified yellow equipment, likely linked to the research efforts.
This incident highlights ongoing tensions in the South China Sea, where overlapping territorial claims often lead to confrontations between countries, particularly between China and its neighbors. The Philippines, in asserting its sovereignty, underscored the importance of protecting its maritime rights amid escalating activities by foreign vessels in its designated maritime zones.
