Volvo anunță disponibilizarea a 3.000 de salariați.

admin 2 min read

Volvo Cars, the Swedish automotive manufacturer, has announced plans to lay off approximately 3,000 employees, primarily from administrative roles in Sweden. This move is part of a restructuring initiative costing around $1.9 billion, reflecting the company’s response to a challenging automotive industry landscape. The layoffs represent about 15% of Volvo’s administrative workforce, which is owned by the Chinese conglomerate Geely Holding since 2010. CEO Håkan Samuelsson cited the “difficult period” facing the automotive sector as a key reason for these drastic measures.

The automotive industry is grappling with a “toxic cocktail” of issues, including a 25% tariff on imported vehicles imposed by former President Trump, soaring material costs, and a decline in sales across Europe. Volvo Cars has reported an 11% drop in global sales for April compared to the previous year. Amid these challenges, the company has also scaled back its ambitions for a complete transition to electric vehicles (EVs) by 2030, citing uncertainties surrounding taxes on EVs in various markets.

Volvo is not alone in facing such struggles; Nissan has announced another wave of layoffs affecting 11,000 employees and the closure of seven factories, totaling 20,000 layoffs within a year—equating to 15% of its workforce.

Compounding the issue is an escalating price war in the automotive market. Chinese automaker BYD has slashed prices on over 20 models, with its cheapest model now available at just $7,745. Other Chinese manufacturers, including Changan and Leapmotor, have followed suit, resulting in a steep decline in the stock values of these automotive firms.

Overall, the convergence of tariffs, rising material costs, reduced sales, and intensified competition has created an environment where established players like Volvo and Nissan are forced to reevaluate their strategies significantly.
